The University of Salamanca (in Latin, UniversitasStudiiSalmanticensis) is a Spanish public university located in the city of Salamanca. It is the oldest university in Spain and the Hispanic world and the third oldest in Europe. Its origin, like most European medieval universities, were cathedral schools whose existence dates back at least to 1174. The University of Salamanca is the best Spanish public university in teaching according to the classification prepared by the Institute of Financial and Industrial Analysis of the Complutense University of Madrid, occupying the sixth place in the general classification.44 Various academic classifications consider it one of the best Spanish universities in the study of modern languages. Founded in 1218 Alfonso IX of León wanted to have higher education in his kingdom and for that reason he created in 1218 the ‘scholasSalamanticae’, the germ of the current University of Salamanca that is now approaching the 800th anniversary of uninterrupted history creating, promoting and disseminating knowledge. Alfonso IX was an enlightened man and ahead of his time, not only for having created the University of Salamanca, but also for other actions such as raising the first Cortes that allowed the participation of various sectors of the population in addition to the usual nobles.This first Study had, according to the decree of 1254, a teacher in law, another in decrees, two decrees, two logic, two grammar, two physics or medicine, one organ, an apothecary, a librarian and two conservative Thus, the University of Salamanca became, together with Paris, Oxford and Bologna, one of the first European universities and today it is the only Spanish that has maintained its activity throughout the centuries.
At present, the University of Salamanca continues to maintain its great capacity for attraction and has a stable student body of around 30,000 students. Account to serve them with nine campuses distributed between Salamanca, Ávila, Zamora, Béjar and Villamayor among which the 26 faculties and higher schools and the 12 research centres that cover aspects as varied as biosciences or lasers are distributed, through agro-food developments , neurosciences, history studies or basic research, among others.They are joined by centres dedicated to strengthening academic and cultural ties with other countries and cultures such as the Japanese Hispanic Cultural Centre, the Centre for Brazilian Studies or the Institute of Latin American Studies, where the continuous movement of teachers and students maintains ties and creates new perspectives for the future in established partnerships.
Another of the distinctive features of the University is the teaching of Spanish that attracts thousands of foreign students in the different educational programs developed in one of the largest training centres for foreigners of world prestige, the International Courses entity of the University of Salamanca. From International Courses the Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE) have been prepared for years and, recently, an agreement signed with the Cervantes Institute, the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the University of Buenos Aires, has made the University of Salamanca lead, along with them, the development of the first Spanish digital certificate (SIELE) that can be carried out from anywhere in the world and that will carry the certification of the Salamanca study as a guarantee of its validity.
Through the Salamanca Science Park, owned by the University, cooperation mechanisms are articulated between the University, companies and public administrations, with the aim of promoting applied research and technological and industrial innovation. In the Science Park of Salamanca collaborates with the University companies dedicated mainly to biotechnology, consulting, professional services, telecommunications, technological research, engineering and informatics.
